Sustainable public sector procurement solutions
The Sustainable Procurement Task Force challenged the public sector with an ambitious goal: for the UK to be recognised as a leader in sustainable procurement across the EU by 2009. Sustainable procurement is about ensuring spending and investment decisions across central and local government, the NHS, police, schools, prisons and housing providers take into account the environmental, social and economic impact. It has moved from ‘optional’ to being recognised as ‘core business’. Organisations face a reputational risk if they do nothing. The leading organisations are actively developing sustainable procurement policies while those that are yet to consider this important issue have larger gaps to close. With the public sector’s spend of £150bn (15% of GDP) making it a huge consumer, the business case for sustainable procurement is widely accepted. So why have only a minority of the public sector begun to take action?
This timely and practical conference addresses key issues in developing policies that deliver on the goals of sustainable procurement across the public sector. A mix of strategic sessions and innovative case studies will help enable organisations to minimise any negative impacts of of procurement decisions and meet the challenge head on.
