Health Business Awards

The Health Business Awards, held in December at the Royal College of Physicians, presented awards in 12 different categories to organisations working inside the NHS.

With the national media all too quick to focus on the perceived failings in the NHS, the HB Awards aims to redress the balance by concentrating on the many examples of innovation, dedication and teamwork that are evident since the NHS transformation began in 1997. The Awards recognise and celebrate the contributions made each year by NHS Trusts and the individuals they employ.

The award categories cover facilities management, technology, procurement and transport as well as the Outstanding Achievement in Healthcare Award, sponsored by Pearson Vue, which went to Liverpool Women's NHS Foundation Trust.

Each year, LWNFT delivers almost 8,000 babies, carries out 11,500 gynaecological procedures and cares for 1,000 preterm infants on its Neonatal Unit, the largest in the country. The latest Healthcare Commission ratings state that LWH now provides an excellent quality of service to patients, and has continued to be excellent at managing its finances.

Other winners included Addenbrookes Hospital, part of the Cambridge University Hospital's NHS Trust, which was awarded the first Health Business Transport Logistics Award, sponsored by Mott MacDonald. In recognising Addenbrooke’s, Health Business Magazine stated: "Since 1993, the number of staff travelling to work by car has been almost halved, with a significant number of staff making use of car sharing. The Trust has also reduced the need for staff travel by concentrating on teleworking and videoconferencing. When taking into account the pressures on NHS Trusts to meet performance targets, Addenbrooke's attention to detail in this area is to be applauded."

Organisers PSE and Health Business Magazine look forward to discovering further evidence of innovation and improvement for the 2008 Awards, which will be held next December. NHS Trusts will be able to enter their projects online by providing a 500 word initial entry statement for consideration.
